Enamels for Beginning and Continuing Students

Beginning students will learn the basics of enameling and torch firing while continuing students will explore more in depth projects. Small bowls, pendants, earrings and pins are available as class projects and may be purchased from instructor. Please bring safety glasses, sketchbook and long sleeved shirt. Studio supply fee $15 at registration.

Beginning Pottery

Sculpture in Clay

Dates: 6/4-7/16

Hours: 9 to 12 p.m.

This class is for the beginner wishful of producing a finished three-dimensional sculpture or bas relief. Instruction will include the methods of using clay coils and slabs to hand-build a piece which will then be fired. Once the sculpture has been fired to bisque, several means of surface finishing will be demonstrated, so that the student may have a completed sculpture to take home. $12 clay fee at registration.

Survey of Art History

Dates: 06/05-6/17

What is art history? Does it pass aimlessly, or will it converge on a goal? What is the purpose of studying art history? Why do we concentrate on Western art? Why are most of the artists men? In what ways do the motivations to create art change from one culture and period to another – and in what ways do the motivations to create art change from one culture and period to another – and in what ways do they remain constant? We show and discuss slides representing art from the Neolithic period to the 21st century.

Carla Funk has a BA in Art History from New College of Florida and M.A. in Art History and Criticism from Florida State University; Ph.D. Candidate, Emory University.

Alternative Firing Techniques

Dates: Session A 6/5-6/26 Session B 7/10-7/31

An advanced studio class for both wheel and handbuilding students. If you want to develop a personal style and consistency or have special projects or skills to enhance, this is the class for you.  Demonstrations are provided to meet the specific needs of each student. Raku and alternative firing techniques will be explored. Class size is limited, register early. $12 clay fee at registration. No class July 3.

Intermediate and Advanced Pottery

Dates: 06/05/ to 07/24/08

Hours: 6:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

This class focuses on good wheel-thrown pottery techniques as well as providing a continuous learning environment for advanced students. This class will take the student through the complete pottery lifecycle from forming clay on the potter’s wheel, trimming, bisque firing and final glazing to the completion of a work of art. Final glazing/firing techniques will include high fire and an ancient method called Raku where the student will be involved with the entire firing process.$12 clay fee at registration. Bring your pottery tool kit, towel, and pottery apron to first class. (tool kit available for purchase in the Museum School Store.)

Beginning Figure Drawing

Dates: 06/07-6/28

Hours: 9 to 12 p.m.

This course is designed for students with no figure drawing experience (continuing students are welcome). Portraiture and artist’s anatomy will be covered in a step by step approach. Action drawings will progress into longer timed poses. Foreshortening, proportions, and pose distortions will be discussed, demonstrated, and worked on in a workshop setting. Live model fees will be shared by the students. (To be paid at first meeting.)

Digital Photography

Dates: 06/7-6/28

Hours: 10 to 12 p.m.

This class will cover the following: (1.) Proper file handling. Transferring your photographs from your camera to your computer (2.) File Management - learn how to save, rename and organize your photographs (3.) Image Editing - learn how to use the basic image editing tools in either Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 6. (4.) Printing - You will learn how to resize and color correct your photographs to get the best quality from your inkjet printer. (5.) Techniques - You will learn how to retouch portraits, and convert your photographs to black and white or sepia. You will need a laptop computer with either Adobe Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.

Just for Teens: Experience Art Project

We have four 2-week summer sessions to choose from that will give your teen the opportunity to hang out with friends while developing their artistic abilities. They can choose from pottery, glass, jewelry and photography classes. Great fun!

Bring your film camera and black and white film and learn the basics of photography from our instructors. Students will learn about their cameras, composition, developing, and the black and white printing process.

CREATING with Glass For Teens: Lampworking and Stained GLASS 6-day course
